School groups visiting Oakhampton Homestead will find that we know how to combine education with good old fashioned fun. For example, not many Australian children have had contact with deer so our herd of fallow deer are always a source of fascination.
We usually organise a sheep sheering demonstration for school excursion groups. As well as a physical demonstration of the shearer's skills we also trace the history of shearing implements down through the ages.
The important role of the wool industry in Australia's development is also covered.
It's pretty hard to visit Oakhampton without encountering the many kangaroos which live on our property. Some are quite tame and will participate in hand feeding.
There is enormous scope for educational field trips, both on Oakhampton Homestead itself and at nearby Split Rock Dam just two kilometres away. And don't overlook Keepit Dam which is only about 32 kms from our property.
We could go on and on about feeding the animals and all manner of other farming activities which guest can observe and participate in whilst visiting Oakhampton.
However we couldn't conclude this section without mentioning our working dogs. They play such an important function in day to day farming life. The dogs know a few tricks too....both good and bad. So keep your eyes open and they might surprise you!
